02 / THE ENGINEERING QUESTION

Bio-based is only the beginning.

Origin, performance and end of life are separate questions.

Regulation & claims

The EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (EU) 2025/40 asks the Commission for a review of bio-based plastic packaging: the Commission should publish, no later than 3 years after the entry into force of this Regulation, a review of the state of technological development and environmental performance of biobased plastic packaging — European Parliament and Council, Regulation (EU) 2025/40 (OJ L, 2025/40, 22.1.2025), retrieved 20 Oct 2026

The Commission's policy framework on bio-based, biodegradable and compostable plastics (COM(2022) 682) warns on claim accounting: attributing a share to end-products through mass balance accounting is a method which is not considered suitable for confirming the actual share of biobased content — European Commission, COM(2022) 682 final, retrieved 20 Oct 2026

Carbon & circularity

Bio-based origin does not settle end of life: Bio-based plastics are fully or partially made from biological resources, rather than fossil raw materials. They are not necessarily biodegradable or compostable. — European Commission, DG Environment, Commission web page, retrieved 20 Oct 2026 A footprint claim needs its functional unit, boundary and comparator before it means anything [Walker 2020; Spierling 2018].

The gap

Bio-based polymers must still meet the stiffness, toughness, heat and barrier demands of the parts they replace — and do it at scale. PLA's high strength but low toughness is the textbook case [Nagarajan 2016]. This site tracks progress on those constraints rather than headline claims.
