Technology routes
Routes are grouped by the chemistry that does the bonding, following the main critical reviews. In practice formulations mix routes: a protein binder with a renewable crosslinker, or lignin in a PF resin. The taxonomy is an editorial tool, not proof that any route is renewable or safe.
| Route | Typical products | Incumbent | Maturity | 2026-Q1 | 2026-Q2 | 2026-Q3 | 2026-Q4 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lignin Phenolic biopolymer | plywood, OSB, particleboard | PF for exterior plywood and OSB; UF or MUF for interior panels. | Partial phenol substitution is in industrial use; full replacement and formaldehyde-free lignin binders are laboratory to pilot scale. | 18 | 11 | 2212 | 8 |
| Proteins Polyamide biopolymers | plywood, hardwood decorative panels, particleboard | UF for interior plywood and panels; PVAc for assembly bonding. | Soy-PAE is commercial for interior plywood; most other proteins are laboratory to pilot scale. | 10 | 8 | 127 | 9 |
| Tannins Polyphenolic extractives | particleboard, plywood, exterior and marine grade panels | PF and MUF for exterior and moisture-resistant panels. | Industrial in niche markets; formaldehyde-free tannin systems are mostly laboratory to pilot scale. | 9 | 5 | 4 | 1 |
| Carbohydrates Polysaccharides and sugars | particleboard, fibreboard, plywood | UF for interior panels. | Starch and sugar co-binders and extenders are commercial; carbohydrate-only panel binders are laboratory to pilot scale. | 9 | 6 | 8 | 4 |
| Polycarboxylic acid systems Ester-forming binders | particleboard, plywood, binderless and low-binder boards | UF for interior particleboard. | Laboratory to pilot scale. | 9 | 5 | 5 | 1 |
| Renewable crosslinkers and aldehyde substitutes Reactive co-components | particleboard, plywood, fibreboard | Formaldehyde in UF, MUF and PF; pMDI for OSB and formaldehyde-free particleboard. | Glyoxal is industrial as a chemical; UG panel binders are laboratory to pilot. 5-HMF supply is approaching first dedicated plant scale. | 5 | 5 | 13 | 2 |
| Non-isocyanate polyurethanes (NIPU) Hydroxyurethane chemistry | particleboard, plywood, wood coatings | pMDI and PF. | Laboratory scale. | 2 | 3 | 1 | 0 |
| Bio-based acrylics and dispersions (watch) Vinyl and acrylic polymers | furniture assembly, edge banding, laminating | Fossil PVAc and acrylic dispersions; EPI for some structural uses. | Mass-balance products are commercial; most direct bio-routes to acrylic acid are laboratory to pilot. | 1 | 3 | 10 | 0 |
