Editions cite indicator codes, evidence identifiers and project stages compactly. This page explains them. Definitions follow the project’s reviewed indicator catalogue. A definition being validated does not mean that every observation of it is.

Evidence labels

LabelMeaning
V / ValidatedThe project checked the stated source claim or calculation within its recorded scope. A checked company claim is still a company claim.
C / CandidateExtracted but not yet reviewed. Extraction confidence is not evidence confidence.
InterpretationThe analyst’s inference from evidence.
Hypothesis (H1–H6)A proposition under test, with stated conditions that would change the view. See the thesis tracker.
EI-E…Identifier of a validated evidence record. Editions resolve them in their evidence appendix.
EI-P4-E…Identifier of a candidate record from the Phase 4 pilot.

Grouped identifiers, for example two records from one source, are not independent votes. See Methodology for the full reading key.

Dates

  • Research cutoff: the last date the edition’s evidence was assembled.
  • Observation period: the period a number measures, such as 2024 or 2025-H2. It is usually earlier than the cutoff.
  • Source date: when the publisher released or revised the source.
  • Snapshot date: when the project captured the source copy it checked.

An edition dated October can rely mostly on 2024 observations; the edition says so explicitly.

Project stages

  • Phase 3 baseline: the validated, snapshot-backed set of observations that current editions use.
  • Phase 4 pilot: an offline replay that re-extracted claims from source snapshots already captured for Phase 3, to test an evidence-acquisition workflow. It produced no findings newer than Phase 3. Its records stay candidates until human review, and re-extraction is not independent confirmation.

Key terms

TermMeaning on this site
Clean Growth Ratio (CGR, K03)Annual increase in clean generation (renewables and nuclear) divided by the annual increase in the system supply requirement. Below 1, clean growth did not cover the extra supply.
Supply requirementGross domestic generation plus net imports, as reported. Not billed consumption or peak load.
Band-IC priceEurostat’s non-household electricity price for annual consumption of 500–2,000 MWh, excluding VAT and recoverable taxes. A reference, not a specific factory tariff.
Nameplate energyThe rated energy capacity of storage in MWh or GWh. Not usable energy, delivered power or annual throughput.
Useful heatHeat actually delivered to the process. Comparing electric and gas heating requires matching useful heat, not fuel input.
COPCoefficient of performance: useful heat delivered per unit of electricity, for a heat pump at stated temperatures.
Matched serviceThe same output, timing, reliability and location compared across technologies. Cost comparisons without it are inputs, not conclusions.
Materials chainSystem change → technology → component → material → property requirement → opportunity or risk.

Indicator codes (K01–K20)

“Definition” shows whether the indicator’s definition is validated or still provisional. It says nothing about the confidence of any particular observation.

Edition 001 uses a reference variant of K15: the EU band-IC price itself, not a regional spread. K08, K09, K12, K16, K19 and K20 were not yet observed in that edition; they are the gaps its theses name.
